1. I am a major movie geek. I watch way to many movies to be considered healthy. I figured I should do something productive with that knowledge.
2. I review some unusual or obscure movies that would probably be unknown to you.
3. I give you the nerd’s perspective on this. I’ll review all kinds of movies, but with an emphasis on the nerd-friendly aspect.

So without further ado…

Gun Sword (26 Episodes @ 23 min. each)

This is an anime series featuring a quirky lead character, Van (pronounced “vaughn”), who wears a tuxedo, drinks milk, and puts all the condiments on his food. He is swift on his feet and carries an unusual whip/sword combination.  He meets his sidekick, Wendy – a young girl, in the first episode. Several other supporting characters are added along the way.

The Plot: Think Kill Bill. Van is out for revenge against the people who killed his would-be wife. Wendy is searching for her kidnapped brother. Along the way, details are filled in. Very well executed.

Humor: It was funny at times, but overall, not really a laugh-a-minute show. It was pretty serious at times, but didn’t really feel boring or overly dramatic.

Philosophical Content: This anime is full of difficult ethical dilemmas and it never really gives any clear answers. Nobody really feels much like a good guy or a bad guy, and I think this was intentional. I don’t want to give too many spoilers. It’s pretty brainy stuff, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone who watched Trigun.

Acting: Not that great as this was an English dub, but better than some dubs I have seen.

Visually: Much along the lines of Trigun or Cowboy Bebop, this is a space western. Animation quality isn’t anything to write home about, but it looks very nice.

Nerd Content: Duh, it’s anime, isn’t that nerdy enough for you. Plus it’s sci-fi as well, so a double whammy.

Pros: A thinking man’s anime.

Cons: Possibly hard to watch for those who don’t like ethical dilemmas.

Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

As a child I loved the book this was based on, and this certainly doesn’t disappoint. Of course, they had to write extra content, or it would have been about a 10 minute movie. The movie follows Flint who is an inventor, and Samantha who is a reporter.

The Plot: An invention of Flint’s is up in the sky and raining food. Pretty self explanatory based on the movie title. Samantha is a rookie reporter / weather girl and lucks out on the timing of her visit. There is also romantic involvement.

Humor: Extremely funny. Very well thought out gags, running jokes, one liners, etc. The writers really stuck it (as in, gymnastics terminology).

Food Content: This made me want a giant steak soooo bad.

Acting: Voice acting was superb and spot on.

Visually: Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to see this in the theaters in 3D, but it was plenty visually appealing in HD on my home TV. The animation quality was very good, and they got the lighting just right for evenings and such. I’m sure this would look awesome in 3D.

Nerd Content: This is a real nerd pride movie in disguise. It’s a central theme in the storyline. You should all see it.

Pros: Great visuals. Funny movie. Nerd pride.

Cons: Nerd pride gets diluted by the other 8-9 messages of the movie.

Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.
