You can thank Robert for this one, since he coerced me into it. Thanks Rob!

Review: Ultraklystron – The Fourth Estate

Normally I don’t review CDs, but I decided to make an exception in this case. I’ll do a brief song-by-song and then give my overall at the end.

01. death won’t stop this

This song is a great start to the album. It has a gritty gangsta rap sound to it. I could totally picture Bone Thugs n Harmony doing a song like this. I can totally relate to having high blood pressure. It really made me contemplate the possibility of my own death. It ends with the poignant phrase “I cannot die – even if you kill me!”

That’s hardcore Karl.

 02. greatest

I like the beat for this one. It has a heavily distorted riff that sounds very repetitive, but it gives it a very dark and hard hitting sound. Which is fitting for the braggadocio rap. This one is definitely one of my favorites. Plus it sounds good pumping from the speakers in my car.

03. gothic lolitas

The subject matter moderately eludes me, as with any of his songs. I guess that means I need to watch more anime. However, this is one of the catchiest songs of his. I could picture this one getting radio play. I don’t know if that is good or bad.

04. absolution

I don’t know how I feel about this one. I can understand what he is talking about, but I really don’t relate since I don’t have cable. The melody is not terribly catchy, but it does have a jazzy charm.

05. dissonance

Speaking of jazzy charm, this one is full of it. I like this one progressively more each time I listen to it. I assume he’s talking about the nerdcore scene, and to a vaguer degree, the music scene in general. I do like his poppy vocal styling on the phrase super-over-verbose. Reminded me of rap as it was when I was a child.

06. outlines

I know what shojo-manga is, but what about it makes it wronger? I like the tune and the beat, but yet again the subject matter eludes me. Still, this is one of my favorites on the album.

07. not a criminal

I can totally relate to this one. I got strip searched one time going into Vancouver one time. Not really strip searched, but everything short of that. Good thing I didn’t have any manga laying around in the backseat.

08. dumb crush

Definitely the catchiest song on the album. The beat also pounds and sounds really good pumping from your car stereo. Lyrically, one of the more accessible songs on on the album. Fun with a serious side to it, and also it helps to brush up on your Greek mythology before you listen to the chorus, which sounds very reminiscent of YTCracker.

09. red shift

As far as serious songs go, this song is one definitely my favorite. The sci-fi riff is incredibly catchy, and the melody on the chorus is reminiscent of DeVision, Iris, or Depeche Mode. The philosophy is well prepared and easy to relate to. One of my top picks on the whole of the album.

10. carcinogenic

While others have expressed their love for the backing track, I don’t really feel this one backs up the Ultra-K sound I know and love. It does sound good bumped from my car. Lyrically as well, it’s awesome.

11. webcam girls

This song is not nearly as crass and sellout as he hyped it up to be in the intro. However, it does have an intoxicating strip club groove to it (not that I’ve ever been to a strip club). Oddly enough, this song has become one of my favorites on the album.

12. he’s an og

Wow, this song is great. I can’t say enough good things about it. Reminds me of my own song Guitar Hero, except with Para Para. I don’t know anything about that game, but this song explains it well enough. The music is wonderful, the lyrics are delivered quickly and with great clarity. This is one of my top overall favorites.

13. nerd playa advisory

I definitely lol’d at the chorus. The second verse seems off topic enough that I was like “wait, which song is this again.” Upon a couple listens, it began to make more sense what he was getting at. The beat is a little weird, and the intro is weird too. Not sure how I feel about that.

14. animate

About the only reference I think I cought was the Tweety Bird one. I liked the song, but more on a mediocre level. I mean it’s definitely good, but it’s one of the weaker songs on the album. It sounds much like the songs on Romance Language.

15. d.y.k.m.k

At first I was like “DKMY? What a sellout!” I liked this song, even if I have no idea what a Konojo is (I later found out it meant the Japanese equivalent of “significant other”). I definitely like the sci-fi feel this one has. Feels a bit eastern, and futuristic as well. Like Blade Runner. Lyrically, it was also one of my favorites.

16. acta attack

I was expecting some video game reference, but it’s actually an acronym for Anti-Counterfitting Trade Agreement, something of which I know very little about. Which is unusual, because I am very interested in such matters (as you can tell from my track Double Standard). This made the song all the more informational and enjoyable.

17. surprise surprise

This is it. The song that withstood the repeated listenings. The one that can claim the prize for the best song on the album. This one gets the Antisoc seal of quality as the one that stands above the rest. This song is so flawless that I can’t find anything bad to say about it. If this is based off any other anime than Ghost in the Shell, PLEASE TELL ME I NEED TO WATCH IT OVER AND OVER!

18. unfamiliar ceiling

I was slightly dissapointed that this was not a song directly about Evangelion. I was also silghtly dissapointed that this song is in 6/8 time instead of 4/4. Expectations aside, it’s really a great song, although perhaps not one of my top picks.

19. game over

As much as I would like Karl to stay in the nerdcore genre forever, you’ve gotta move on at some point in your life. I, however, will be dropping these nerdcore rhymes till I die. Speaking of which, the CD loops back to track 1 right afterward. It can keep playing over and over without me giving it much thought. Back to the point, this track is definitely one of my top picks.

Overall, I did like this album slightly more than Opensource Lyricist. I haven’t heard a Ulltraklystron album I didn’t like, and this is no exception. I may have gripes with individual songs, but realistically, I like every song on the album, although some songs not to the same degree. The production has taken another step upward. For those of you who are too poor and / or too stingy to shell out the cash for any of his previous releases, let me summarize what Ultraklystron stands for:

  • Hard hitting beats that sound really good on a good system
  • Anime
  • Clear, legible (although often misheard and misinterpreted) vocals
  • Lyrics that actually make sense and aren’t just random scatterbrained rhymes
  • Music grounded in reality, with surreal overtones
  • Anime
  • American Cartoons
  • Drum and Bass
  • Japanimation (lol)
  • Clever pop-cultural references
  • Anime
  • Computers
  • Other non-anime non-computer related geekery
  • Anime

I can’t wait to hear further releases, although he will be taking yet another break from his own artistic projects. I don’t know what the future holds, but I am confident that it will be high in bass thumping goodness, and low in failures.
